CHOOSING YOUR MEDICAL ALERT JEWELRY
For people with ongoing health issues, medical professionals and organizations often recommend wearing a medical alert bracelet, necklace, or charm as part of a plan to support your personal health and safety.
Here are some examples of conditions where medical ID jewelry may be recommended:
- Chronic disease, illness, or medical condition– Medical professionals may recommend wearing a medical ID to patients with (as examples): Asthma, Bleeding Disorders, Chronic Kidney Disease, Diabetes, Epilepsy, Hearing Impairment, Heart Patients, Organ Transplants, Seizure Disorder, Substance Use Disorders, Vision Impairment, Celiac Disease, as well as many other conditions as recommended by your physician.
- Allergy that can cause an anaphylactic response such as foods (examples: peanuts, shellfish), drugs (examples: penicillin, sulfa drugs), insect bites (examples: bee or wasp stings), or materials (example: latex)
- Medication or medical device information necessary for responders in an emergency, such as: blood thinners, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, pacemakers, or cochlear implants
- Mental health issues and illnesses to help responders understand a person’s behavior during an emergency, avoid misdiagnosis, and identify the help or treatment best suited to them. Examples include: ADHD, Anxiety Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Eating Disorders, Posttraumatic Stress Syndrome
The best medical ID for you is the one that you will actually wear all the time, therefore when choosing a medical ID it’s important that it fit in with your lifestyle, personal style, occupation and comfort.
Every piece of CHARMED Medical Jewelry prominently features the Star of Life symbol (that represents emergency medical services) and will be engraved with your personal medical information.

- Designs–We offer multiple styles of medical alert bracelets and necklaces (as most EMS personnel are trained to look around the neck and the wrists for Medical IDs), all of which will be customized with your information. Since it is advised that Medical IDs be worn at all times, it is best to choose a piece of jewelry that will be comfortable and fits your lifestyle. We offer a variety of styles that can be personalized to fit your needs.
- Materials–We make medical jewelry in both solid gold and sterling silver, both with and without rhodium plating (depending on the style and color). Our pieces may also have enamel, or pavé set precious stones such as diamonds, rubies, and garnet. Please see our product descriptions for specific details on materials for any pieces of interest.
- Care – Due to the precious metals and stones used in crafting our medical jewelry, only minimal care is required. General cleaning requires only a quick soak in warm water with a small amount of dish soap and use of a soft-bristle baby toothbrush (with the exception of enamel) to remove any dirt. Please do not use any abrasive cleaners or vigorous scrubbing, as this may create scratches or loosen stones. For detailed care instructions please refer to our Product Care Guide.
- Engraving – The personalized information that you provide will be custom engraved on your CHARMED Medical Jewelry so that first responders can be better equipped to treat you.
Different styles of medical ID jewelry will allow for different amounts of information to be engraved – please refer to each specific product page for engraving details. If you would like to would like to include more information than your chosen design allows, it may be best to abbreviate certain information (some common medical abbreviations are listed below)
It is important to engrave the pertinent information that would be helpful in the event that you are unable to communicate for yourself. Items to consider (and discuss with your physician) include:
- First and Last Name – To allow first responders to quickly identify you
- In Case of Emergency (ICE) Phone Number – Contact phone number of a primary emergency contact such as a family member, friend, or your health care provider
- Medical Conditions or Allergies – Any conditions that may cause a medical emergency or be triggered by trauma or common medical treatments. If you have multiple conditions, we recommend consulting with your physician or medical professional for appropriate abbreviations (a list of common abbreviations is included below).
- Current Medications – Any medications you are currently taking that may have potentially dangerous interactions, side effects, or risks..
- Other Considerations – alerts regarding special treatment considerations due to your medical history, such as whether or not you should be administered certain medications or certain interventions
Please review any and all information you provide for engraving. We are not liable for any inaccuracies in customer submissions.
Please note that we do not engrave DNR or Do Not Resuscitate on medical jewelry as compliance with these requests varies by state and is subject to state law. Please check your state for DNR requirements and forms.
